Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Foundational Knowledge

• Define "risk" and "risk management" in the context of a healthcare institution, as per international standards like ISO 31000.
• Explain the importance, general, preventive, and ultimate goals of a Hospital Risk Management (HRM) program.
• Describe the concept of "Hospital Risk Maturity" and the importance of its assessment.

2. Application and Analysis

• Apply the ISO 31000 Risk Management Framework and Process (including establishing context, identification, analysis, evaluation, treatment, and monitoring & review) to a hospital setting.
• Analyze risks using qualitative and quantitative methods, including the use of likelihood and impact matrices to determine risk levels.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of existing risk controls and propose appropriate risk treatment strategies (avoid, control, transfer, accept).
• Develop a basic risk register and risk treatment plan for identified hazards.

3. Integration and Implementation

• Integrate risk management principles with Quality Management Systems and Patient Safety Programs, including the International Patient Safety Goals (IPSGs).
• Design key components of a risk management manual, including policies, procedures, and plans for prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.
• Formulate strategies for common hospital risks (e.g., medico-legal suits, natural disasters, financial non-sustainability) using an all-hazards approach.
