Introduction to the Program on Patient Safety and Quality Improvement in Health Care
We are pleased to present a comprehensive program on Patient Safety and Quality Improvement in Health Care, aimed at raising awareness and promoting safe practices within healthcare institutions. This program is part of the global efforts led by the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international bodies to ensure safe and effective health care for every patient.
This activity aims to introduce participants to the fundamental principles of patient safety, internationally recognized goals in this field, and an overview of key initiatives and strategies that help reduce medical errors and minimize risks patients may face during their care.
The program will also discuss major barriers to implementing safety standards and proposed solutions to overcome them, emphasizing the role of healthcare professionals, patients, and their families in achieving a safe care environment.
We hope this program will help raise awareness and strengthen the commitment of healthcare workers to the highest standards of quality and safety, based on our belief that safe care is every patient's right and a shared responsibility among all stakeholders.
By the end of the session/course, the learner will be able to:
Explain the concept of patient safety and its importance in improving healthcare quality.
Differentiate between types of adverse events such as sentinel events, medication errors, and near misses.
Apply patient safety principles in a healthcare setting.
Analyze International Patient Safety Goals (IPSG) and explain how to implement them.
Evaluate the effectiveness of communication among healthcare teams and its impact on patient safety.
Propose measures to reduce medication errors, especially for high-alert medications (HAM).
Identify strategies to prevent healthcare-associated infections (e.g., CLABSI, CAUTI, VAP, SSI).
Discuss the role of the healthcare team, especially nurses, in promoting patient safety.
Recognize quality standards in healthcare and evaluation tools (e.g., audit, accreditation).
Analyze barriers to implementing safety standards and propose solutions.
